From detours to traffic updates, your guide to Cape Fear Memorial Bridge lane closures

The eastbound lanes of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge will close to traffic beginning at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, as the next phase of a months-long preservation project begins.

The N.C. Department of Transportation announced late last year it would partially close the bridge to conduct repairs to the existing deck and support beams. While the bridge remains safe for motorists, NCDOT officials say these upgrades are critical.

Work began in January, with some temporary lane closures impacting drivers during the evening and nighttime hours. The next phase of the project involves closing the eastbound lanes coming into Wilmington for repairs, while the westbound lanes of the bridge heading toward Brunswick County will remain open.

Here’s your guide to navigating this round of lane closures.

Checking traffic impacts

The months-long closures are expected to highly impact traffic in and around Wilmington, NCDOT says, but there’s a way to check real-time traffic impacts to know what the quickest route could be.
