If you’re feeling playful — or maybe a little spiteful — this Valentine’s Day, a Southport animal hospital has the fundraiser for you.
Through River Road Animal Hospital’s “Stop buggin’ me” fundraiser, you can play a harmless prank on your ex while helping a local nonprofit in the process. For a small donation, the Southport veterinarian will name a mealworm or cockroach after your ex-partner.
On Feb. 13, the veterinarian will livestream a video of the bugs being fed to the facility’s resident chickens and ducks, along with the list of names they’ve been assigned, on their Facebook and Instagram pages at 12:30 p.m. The veterinarian will only release the first names given to the critters, so there’s little chance your ex will find out.
Morgan Dillard, office supervisor at River Road Animal Hospital, said the inaugural fundraiser was an idea from a veterinary assistant at the office, Morgan Harris. Harris was inspired by a similar event which launched in 2020 by the San Antonio Zoo – the “Cry Me a Cockroach” fundraiser. This year, a social media campaign from the zoo went viral and was featured on several global news channels and some U.S. talk shows.
