Oak Island council takes big steps to preserve trees

Oak Island Town Council last month passed sweeping changes to a chapter in the code of ordinances that provides enhanced protection for the preservation of trees. Led by former planning board member Terri Cartner, council unanimously approved nearly a dozen text amendments to Chapter 32, a section of the code of ordinances that has undergone intense scrutiny over the past two years. Cartner, having served on the planning board side of coming up with changes that would protect the island’s tree population, introduced a majority of the proposals and received overwhelming support from her colleagues and attendees at the Jan. 17 meeting.
