On February 11, 2024, the Oak Island Police Department reported a death at a residence on SE 56th Street. The cause appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. As is routine in such cases, an investigation was launched. No suspects were taken into custody and the case was not treated as a homicide.
The police did not issue a public notice due to the sensitive nature of the incident and no immediate threat to the local community. At the time of the police statement, there was no evidence of foul play. However, physical evidence is being sent to a crime lab for further analysis.
The Oak Island Police Department confirmed they were receiving help from the NC State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) and expressed their appreciation for the SBI’s assistance.
The department addressed false social media claims of a murder and a suspect at large. They denied these claims, stating that they prioritize public safety and would issue necessary updates through official channels, including the OKInformation email system and the town’s social media accounts.
