After a year of delay, crews start clearing land for Surf City’s new recreational complex

It’s been about a year since Surf City started working on plans to build a new 45-acre recreational complex on the mainland.

The original timeline for the Earl G. and Inez Batts Recreational Complex stated that the first phase of the complex could be open as early as next month, but with delays, crews just started clearing the land for the new complex last month.

The park will have two phases. The first phase will include a skate park, playground, two sand volleyball courts, and an 18-hole disc golf course. The other phase will include multi-use fields with lights for players and visitors.

Surf City received $1 million in grant funding for the project from the North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund and the Federal Land and Water Conservation Fund.

The site, located on J. H. Batts Road, still has bulldozers working during the day to remove piles of brush. The land is looking clearer, but there’s still a lot of work to be done.
