ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) – On Tuesday, July 3, Gov. Roy Cooper signed legislation to create permanent funding for the leading cause of death among firefighters: cancer. The law provides an initial benefit of $37,000 and a lump sum benefit of $74,000 if a firefighter has two instances of cancer.
