NC Museum of History to undergo major redesign

A historic renovation is coming to the

NC Museum of History

. The museum anticipates the renovation taking two to three years, and it will close Monday, Oct. 7 while the gift shop will remain open until Dec. 29. The third-floor exhibits have been closed since June 2024.

After 30 years on East Edenton Street, the museum said it’s time for a “grand revitalization.” The makeover will transform the museum, giving an in-depth look into NC’s history.

“We’re embarking on an incredible journey, and what awaits us on the other side is nothing short of extraordinary — reimagined exhibits that will bring North Carolina history to life,” said Brad Wilson, interim director of the NC Museum of History and Division of State History Museums, in a press release.

During its closure, the museum will provide

digital resources

to keep the history of NC accessible. The museum has ties to the Smithsonian and was established in 1902, and the current museum was built in 1994.
