Report shows how major parties are targeting NC in campaign’s final weeks

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — With 50 days to go until the general election, a new report shows how Democratic and Republican campaigns are investing in North Carolina, which is seeing the most gubernatorial ads of any state with a race for governor this year.

The Wesleyan Media Project , which tracks campaign advertising, noted that in the two weeks stretching from Aug. 26 to Sept. 8, North Carolina saw more than 8,400 ads statewide in the race between Atty. Gen. Josh Stein (D) and Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson to succeed current Gov. Roy Cooper (D).

The next closest state was New Hampshire, which saw 4,949 during that time.

“If you feel like it’s a lot of ads, you’re right. We are seeing more ads than we’ve seen in previous years,” said Chris Cooper, an expert on state politics at Western Carolina University.

Stein and groups aligned with him accounted for about 68 percent of the ads in North Carolina’s race, the report shows.

“It is about not just these allegations against Mark Robinson, but it’s about the amplification of those allegations through these advertisements. So, you can’t really understand one without the other,” said Chris Cooper.
