Brunswick County Schools to remain closed through the week

After Brunswick County received historic flooding from a storm on Monday, the county’s school system is staying closed through at least the end of the week.

Brunswick County Schools made the announcement Tuesday afternoon on its website that schools will remain closed for students. Specific instructions and options have been emailed to staff members. The district has had schools closed since Monday.

While effects were seen across the Wilmington area, some of the hardest hit areas were in Brunswick. Some parts received more than 20 inches of rain, which flooded homes and roads. Several roads, including major highways such as U.S. 17, have stretches flooded out with no timetable for repairs.

Places such as Southport are practically inaccessible by vehicle with several roads to the coastal city damaged.

New Hanover County Schools and Pender County Schools will both operate Wednesday on a normal schedule. Both districts received criticism after opening on Monday with conditions deteriorating only to announce an early release during the storm.
