Good morning, and welcome to this week’s newsletter, brought to you by, Renee Spencer.
If you’ve driven into or out of Southport recently, chances are you’ve been stuck in traffic.
The first couple of days after things got back to normal after the no-name storm hit were rough. I recall seeing Facebook posts from friends who were stuck in the Walmart parking lot for three and four hours due to the traffic jam. Thankfully, the Southport Police Department jumped into action with partner agencies—the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, the N.C. Highway Patrol, and a strike team from the Monroe Police Department—and began directing traffic.
These days, you still might get stuck in traffic, but you’re looking at minutes instead of hours. For folks wanting to know what causing the traffic, it’s all about having only one way into and out of the city. When the unnamed storm took out two bridges along N.C. 211, it also cut down on the ways in and out of Southport.
In addition to N.C. 211, other major thoroughfares in Brunswick County were damaged. This week, I talked with the N.C. Department of Transportation to find out when those repairs might be completed and what work is included in those repairs. You can find all that here .
