The Bridges of Brunswick County and a new face at the StarNews

While Southport is still facing difficulties from Potential Tropical Cyclone 8, things are getting better.

One of the bridges along N.C. 211 opened to traffic last week. Our new Brunswick County reporter Savanna Teneoff has the scoop .

While the bridge isn’t going to fix our traffic jam situation — there is still only one lane into and one lane out of the city — it’s a sign of progress and recovery, and we are thankful for it. Representatives from N.C. Department of Transportation say the other bridge should be fixed by the end of this month, opening another way in and out.

In the meantime, Southport’s business owners are urging folks to come shop, eat, and visit the downtown area. Several shops offer unique clothing, jewelry, gifts, and home décor, and instead of fighting the traffic, stay and enjoy drinks and a meal at some of the city’s awesome bars and restaurants. I might see you there.

Now…here’s a look at what’s happening around the area…

The agenda

If you’ve been here awhile, this might seem like déjà vu for you (remember the Cape Fear Skyway and the Cape Fear Crossing), but NCDOT and local officials are once again looking at options for a replacement of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge that connects Brunswick and New Hanover County. The best part is that you get to weigh in on the designs and offer comments. For more on the designs and how to submit comments, read reporter Madison Lipe’s story here .
