‘The Board of Elections has a lot of explaining to do’: Candidates frustrated as absentee ballots remain uncounted in New Hanover County

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Five days after Election Day, over 3,600 ballots remain uncounted in New Hanover County, leaving pivotal local races in question. It’s a result of 1,912 provisional ballots and roughly 1,750 mail-in ballots still outstanding – which the county Board of Election says will be processed on Thursday, just a day before statewide canvassing, when the state Board of Elections will certify election results. The New Hanover County Board of Elections previously implemented an administrative deadline to not initially count absentee ballots received after October 31 because of “volume and necessary verification procedures.”
