Planning board OKs more houses in Brunswick while denying others

More residential development for the Leland area was approved by Brunswick County this month.

The Brunswick County Planning Board during its Nov. 12 meeting approved over 20 new housing units in the Leland area but denied over 100 single-family units in Shallotte . Here’s what to know.

More housing coming to Leland

The planning board approved Maco Commons, a proposed 25-single-family unit major subdivision on Maco Road NE in Leland . The applicant was 2 Tracts Development, LLC.

Nearly 10 of the 27.10 acres is wetlands. The staff report states the Blueprint Brunswick Future Land Use Plan denoted the area as rural agricultural and open space conservation. A majority of the site is also located in a flood hazard zone.

Bradley Harrell, representing the applicant, said his team is working with a soil scientist and FEMA to address soil concerns and flood hazard areas.

All future lots will be served by individual well and septic systems and roads will be private.
