From the archives: Despite need, a downtown Wilmington grocery store was ‘going to fail’

The idea of a grocery store in downtown Wilmington is far from a new one. Part of the city’s comprehensive plan, in recent months plans have surfaced for a Northside Food Co-op at 10th and Post streets and a Publix at Chestnut Street.

A grocery proposal 25 years ago didn’t carry the same weight to at least one city official.

According to a story in the May 18, 2000, Wilmington Morning Star, a committee of the North Fourth Street Partnership had tried for years to develop a 10,000- to 14,000-square foot store and had an option to buy land between Hanover and Brunswick streets along both Third and Fourth streets (now across from Wilson Center)…
