WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The Historic Wilmington Foundation (HWF) is holding the Maides Cemetery Plaque Rededication ceremony to celebrate and honor Col. Kathy King.
King was passionate about identifying the graves in the community burial ground after her sister Carolyn drowned at Topsail Beach in 1966. The King family was unable to afford a permanent headstone to mark the grave.
While she never found her sister’s grave, King found more than 200 death certificates that indicated a loved one was laid to rest at Maides. The local library only accounted for 75 African Americans who were buried there…
