Former NHCS Superintendent Tim Markley dies during charity bike ride

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) – Timothy Scott Markley, former superintendent of New Hanover County Schools, died suddenly Saturday while biking in the Tour de Blueberry charity ride in Willard. He was 60.

According to his online obituary, Markley died June 21 during the annual cycling event held during the NC Blueberry Festival. A former paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division, Markley went on to lead school districts in North Carolina and New Hampshire.

Markley served as superintendent of New Hanover County Schools from 2010 to 2020. However, Markley’s time with NHCS ended amid public controversy and he resigned in early 2020 following a separation agreement with the school board…
