Each day, about 75,000 vehicles use the intersection of Eastwood and Military Cutoff roads, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation.
By 2045, officials forecast 100,000 vehicles will use the intersection daily, which could drop its level of service to an F, according to N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) spokesperson Lauren Jenkins, signifying an unstable traffic flow or bottleneck.
To handle increasing traffic, NCDOT plans to construct an overpass, elevating Eastwood Road over Military Cutoff Road while also adding traffic lights and making other roadway adjustments.
