Miscommunication over shark activity causes confusion at Carolina Beach

CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. (WECT) -A coastal hazard statement from the National Weather Service confused Carolina Beach this week after it referenced an increase in shark activity that local ocean rescue says they never reported.

The statement, issued Monday, warned beachgoers of “higher than normal shark activity.” According to Steve Pfaff with the Wilmington National Weather Service, the alert was sent after receiving a call from someone they believed to be with Carolina Beach Ocean Rescue.

“In years past, we’ve issued statements on request for man-of-war, jellyfish, Atlantic sea nettles just to provide insight to the public that there are other hazards out there,” Pfaff said. “We kind of act like a megaphone for our partners.”…
