‘It’s time to step up’: Wilmington homeless shelter asks for donations amid heat wave

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – This weekend’s heat wave will be dangerous for many, but especially for those who don’t have a way to escape the outdoors.

Good Shepherd Center is a homeless shelter in Wilmington that’s been working to prepare the homeless community for the high temperatures. Staff say they’ve been handing out donations of food, water, bug spray, sunscreen and umbrellas this past week.

“For us, preparing looks like calling on our community members to come and drop off items,” Senior Director of Development for the center Meagan Hutchings said. “We do the absolute best we can to make sure we’re able to provide with as many people as possible, the water and the things that they need to to make it through the days.”…
