Man pleads guilty to attempted murder charge in 2024 Southport shooting

SOUTHPORT, N.C. (WECT) – A man was sentenced after he pleaded guilty to attempted murder involving a shooting in Southport.

According to court documents, the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) investigated a shots-fired call at a home on July 6, 2024.

Detectives determined that Malaki Smith fired an automatic weapon at the home to shoot one of the five people with whom he was in a relationship. Investigators found that he had been violent toward her during their relationship, and he had threatened her life before with a gun…
