Organization pushes for safe sleeping spaces for people experiencing homelessness

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – A community outreach meeting is scheduled for Aug. 7 to discuss the issue of people experiencing homelessness who are sleeping in their cars for shelter.

The group, Vigilant Hope, is proposing a program called Cape Fear Safe Parking, where people can safely park and sleep in their cars at night without having to relocate them.

“If you can imagine having to move your car six or seven times a night, the sleep deprivation that you experience, what that does to your body and brain, how that affects how you can live your everyday life,” said Laura Bullock, Executive Director of Vigilant Hope…
