Surry elections chair resigns after police allege he drugged granddaughters’ ice cream

A headline out of Surry County is making national news as the chairman of that county’s Board of Elections resigned after he was arrested and charged with multiple crimes, including felony child abuse, in the city of Wilmington. Among the accusations are that he spiked the food of two of his granddaughters with Ecstasy and cocaine.

James Edwin Yokeley Jr., a one-time Surry County Board of Education candidate and chairman of the Board of Elections, officially tendered his resignation less than an hour after State Auditor Dave Boliek called for him to step down last Thursday.

The action came two days after Yokeley was arrested in Wilmington and charged with felony child abuse, felony possession of schedule I narcotics, and with contaminating food, stemming from an investigation that began earlier in the month…
