WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The New Hanover County (NHC) Office of Civic Engagement, in partnership with the NHC Sheriff’s Office and the NC Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, is slated to host ‘Law Enforcement and Me’ as part of Deaf Awareness Month.
‘Law Enforcement and Me’ will provide communication strategies and education for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, enabling them to interact effectively with law enforcement.
The event will cover:
- Effective communication
- Education on legal protections under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Methods to handle engagements with law enforcement, such as traffic stops, to ensure your rights are respected
