WILMINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA — Drivers across the Cape Fear region are urged to use caution as bands of heavy rain continue to sweep through southeast North Carolina, raising the risk of ponding on roads and localized flooding through Tuesday night.
Storm System Driving the Rain
The National Weather Service in Wilmington says tropical moisture linked to Tropical Storm Imelda is fueling the rainfall. Rain chances are at 70% Monday and remain elevated into Tuesday evening, with gusty northeast winds of 15–20 mph.
Coastal counties, including New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender, face the greatest threat of flooding in poor-drainage areas.
Travel Hazards on I-40 and U.S. 17

- Avoid driving through standing water
- Keep phones charged in case of power outages
