Brunswick deputy justified in fatal shooting, hailed as ‘a hero’ by district attorney

A Brunswick County deputy was justified in shooting his firearm in an exchange of gunfire that resulted in the death of a man, the district attorney’s office has determined.

Deputy Aaron Carter was justified in returning fire to defend himself and Deputy John Loyd after Brandon Wayne Taylor pulled out a gun and fired, hitting Carter twice, according to a news release from the district attorney’s office. Taylor, 34, of Collinsville, Virginia, was shot four times and was pronounced dead at the scene in the incident that occurred Sept. 22 in Leland, the news release states.

Carter was shot in the right shoulder and the right chest area, the district attorney’s office said. That day he was treated and released from a hospital, said Emily Flax, the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office public information officer…
