Cold case closed: North Myrtle Beach drowning victim identified

A man found drowned in a swimming pool in North Myrtle Beach nearly a decade ago has been identified and will finally receive a proper burial by his biological family.

DNA testing has determined that the body is that of Malquan Tyreek Hawkins of New Hanover County, North Carolina, according to Tamara Willard, chief deputy coroner of Horry County.

Hawkins was 22 years old at the time of his death, and his body has been held by the coroner’s office for the past nine years. State law requires that bodies be held until the person is either identified or claimed…
