If Santa needs Christmas spirit to power his sleigh on Christmas Eve, he will find plenty in Southport.
Though the city is small in number, it’s mighty when it comes to supporting local events and activities. That sense of community was on full display when the StarNews recently asked readers to cast their votes for the best holiday events in the Wilmington area.
Though our poll only received 244 votes, the majority of those were for events in Southport. Taking first place with more than 85 percent of the vote was the Light Up the Night Parade hosted by the Southport Fire Department. The parade, which has been around for as long as many can remember, started with just firetrucks. Firefighters loaded children onto the tops of the trucks and cruised through the city streets giving kids a good look at the lights glimmering in the night sky. In recent years, the parade has grown to include floats, beauty queens, decorated golf carts, bands, and just about everything you can imagine.
