A start date has been set for the construction of a new overpass near the Isabel Holmes Bridge.
The N.C. Department of Transportation has had a flyover ramp on U.S. 421 in the works for roughly a decade. The project, which will transform the intersection of U.S. 421 and U.S. 74, aims to alleviate congestion in the high-traffic area. Average annual daily traffic volumes at the intersection can reach up to nearly 40,000 vehicles, according to data from NCDOT.
NCDOT’s most recent State Transportation Improvement Program plan projects that construction will begin in 2030. Right of way acquisition is slated to begin in 2028. The total cost of the improvements is $55 million, up from the initial estimate of $36 million.
