Fire officials urge heating safety as bitter cold grips southeastern North Carolina

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Fire officials are warning residents about potentially deadly heating dangers as bone-chilling cold settles across southeastern North Carolina and icy roads impact the region.

“This is the time of year where firefighters all over the country, especially in cold places, start to see an increase in burns related to heaters, but then also fires,” said Wendy Giannini-King with the Wilmington Fire Department.

Fire officials recommend keeping space heaters at least three feet away from furniture, bedding and curtains. Space heaters should be plugged directly into wall outlets and never into extension cords…
