North Carolina State Crime Lab hits 10,000 gun evidence leads

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – North Carolina’s State Crime Lab has generated 10,000 leads through a national ballistic database, Attorney General Jeff Jackson announced Tuesday.

The milestone involves the National Integrated Ballistic Information System (NIBIN), which connects ballistic evidence from firearms used in crimes across different jurisdictions. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) administers the system.

The leads have assisted local, state and federal law enforcement in investigating gun-related crimes. North Carolina’s lab was among the first facilities nationwide to use the system and remains the state’s busiest location for the program…
