Documentary film examines 1898 Wilmington coup, massacre

SMITHFIELD — The Black History Committee of the Johnston County Heritage Commission, in partnership with PBS North Carolina and Working Films, will host a free community screening of “American Coup: Wilmington 1898” later this month.

The documentary examines the 1898 race massacre and insurrection in Wilmington, then North Carolina’s largest city. Organizers said the event is part of a statewide effort to increase awareness of the massacre, its historical significance and its lasting impact.
