From the archives: A ‘mega-airport’ proposed near Wilmington

Wilmington wasn’t the only place along the Carolina coast seeing a growth spurt in the 1990s.

Just across the border in South Carolina, the same was happening in Myrtle Beach, pushing some transportation facilities to capacity. That prompted an official there to propose another airport.
