Local leaders are set to consider a special-use permit on Monday for a new sand mine that would disturb about 200 acres in central Pender County.
The project is slated for a portion of a 550-acre vacant site off Shaw Highway in Holly Township. According to documents from the Pender County Board of Commissioners’ regular meeting agenda, the special use permit would allow for the operation of a non-metallic mineral mining site and a quarrying sand mine.
Shaw Plantation Properties LLC owns the property, which is currently zoned as a Rural Agricultural zoning district. According to county documents, typical site activities could include the “excavation of sand using standard earth-moving equipment, stockpiling of material, loading of trucks and reclamation of completed mining areas.”…
