Port of Wilmington intermodal rail yard expansion on track for June completion

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – A $22.5 million intermodal rail yard expansion at the Port of Wilmington is expected to be complete by the end of the current fiscal year in June, according to the North Carolina Ports Authority.

The project broke ground in fall 2024 after receiving an $18 million Federal RAISE grant. It will add four new working tracks with a combined length of 5,000 feet.

Once complete, phase one of the project will expand the Port of Wilmington’s intermodal rail throughput capacity to more than 150,000 TEUs annually, according to the authority. The port currently handles approximately 14,000 container movements by rail each year…
