IRS releases 2026 Dirty Dozen list of tax scams

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced its annual Dirty Dozen list of tax scams for 2026 that threaten tax and financial information of taxpayers, businesses and tax professionals.

March 5 is designated as National Slam the Scam Day, with the aim of educating taxpayers about identity theft schemes and various forms of fraud, especially during the filing season.

“Today, Slam the Scam Day, provides a great opportunity to remind everyone to remain vigilant and watch out for scams because thieves continuously adjust the pitches they use to take advantage of honest taxpayers,” Frank J. Bisignano, chief executive officer of the IRS, said. “For more than two decades, the IRS has used the Dirty Dozen list to flag emerging scams that taxpayers should watch out for.”…
