Wallace man charged after parking deck shooting in downtown Wilmington

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – A Wallace man has been charged in connection with a shooting inside a downtown Wilmington parking deck early Sunday morning, according to the Wilmington Police Department (WPD).

Rafael Martinez, 22, was charged with Felony Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill, Inflicting Serious Injury, following an investigation by the WPD Criminal Investigation Division.

Investigators said Martinez shot 26-year-old David Corpus in a parking deck in the 100 block of Market Street. Corpus was transported to Novant Health NHRMC with serious injuries.

While responding to the shooting, officers approached a nearby vehicle whose occupant they believed to be a suspect. The driver, identified as 21-year-old Edilberto Espinoza-Sierra, refused to comply and attempted to flee. Officers fired their weapons, killing Espinoza-Sierra.
