, the 18-unit seafood restaurant franchise, has named America’s “Best Crab Leg Puller” following a nationwide search. This initiative was designed to celebrate a recognizable element of the seafood dining experience while reinforcing the brand’s commitment to quality and guest engagement.
Technical Excellence at Shuckin’ Shack
After reviewing submissions from across the country and working with the National Association of Crustacean Extraction Professionals, the brand selected Nick Powills for his superior skill in crab leg preparation. The evaluation relied on a proprietary scoring system developed by the Shuckin’ Shack Shellfish Performance Analytics Department.
The rigorous testing measured several key metrics to ensure professional-grade results:
- Pull Velocity (PV): The average time taken to extract full leg meat.
- Meat Integrity Ratio (MIR): The percentage of meat removed completely intact.
- Shell Break Efficiency (SBE): Minimizing unnecessary fragmentation of the shell.
- Expected Meat Yield (xMY): Projected extraction based on leg size and fracture patterns.
“At Shuckin’ Shack, we’re always looking for ways to connect with our guests in a way that reflects who we are as a brand,” said Darren Keeler, Vice President of Marketing and Creative. “This campaign gave us an opportunity to highlight a small but recognizable part of the seafood experience.”
Defining the Shuckin’ Shack Pro
Powills separated himself from the field by utilizing a technical V-Notch maneuver and accounting for the thermal regulation of the butter to ensure a frictionless glide. His consistency in maintaining structural integrity under high-pressure conditions earned him the top spot.
“Nick has a feel for the cartilage that you just can’t teach,” the department noted. “Their ability to maintain structural integrity is what separates a hobbyist from a Shack Pro.”
A Neighborhood Seafood Destination
This campaign reflects the brand’s emphasis on providing a social atmosphere that goes beyond the meal. Shuckin’ Shack has grown from a 900-square-foot location in Carolina Beach to a franchise spanning six states, offering fresh seafood, cold beer, and craft cocktails…
