Once a vital dock, Wilmington seeks federal funds for bulkhead repairs

An aging Wilmington bulkhead that keeps water off Water Street is in need of attention.

With decades of exposure to water, debris and wave action taking their toll, the city is seeking federal funding for a riverfront bulkhead replacement project. The city said the 59-year-old metal bulkhead has “far outlived its expected lifespan, its integrity degraded by decades of rust, debris and wave action.”

Because of that, the city said, the bulkhead needs to be replaced in order to stabilize the shoreline and support future riverwalk improvements…
