At a Crossroads: Overpass at Military Cutoff & Eastwood Road

A long-proposed overpass at Eastwood Road and Military Cutoff has sparked renewed concern about growth, traffic and quality of life in the Wrightsville Beach area.

Wrightsville Beach and Wilmington citizens are raising concerns and questions about the N.C. Department of Transportation’s (NCDOT) plans to elevate Eastwood Road over Military Cutoff Road.

Those opposed say it is urgent to speak up now, before bidding and contract work on the 12-year-old plan begins in September 2027. They hope to delay or eliminate the Eastwood overpass construction, known as project U-5710. Some opponents admit they did not fully realize the extent of the changes an overpass would entail during its four-year construction phase.

Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo sent a resolution to NCDOT in May 2025 requesting a new meeting to discuss a reexamination of project U-5710. None has been scheduled. The last public meeting was held in 2018…
