Local melanoma survivor shares life-saving message about sun exposure

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – One in five Americans are expected to develop skin cancer by the age of 70, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation.

Wilmington resident Sherry O’Daniell is now part of that statistic after doctors found melanoma. She said she grew up at the tail end of the baby boomer generation, when a tan was the goal.

“Our mom sent us outside, we had no sunscreen on, and we played outside all day. In college and in high school, my girlfriends and I had baby oil and iodine. We wanted to get that Christie Brinkley St. Tropez tan,” O’Daniell said…
