Certify First, Fix Later: How Massachusetts keeps serving up half-baked ballot questions

I’m starting to think about Massachusetts’ ballot initiative process in much the same way I think about the North Shore Roast Beef sandwich.

Both are a mess of flavors and conflicting ideas that, at first glance, don’t make a whole lot of sense. But, beloved by the locals, they’ve thumbed their noses at the skeptics and have endured to become beloved regional fixtures.

It’s the only way I can think of to explain the glut of news this week surrounding the one part of the Bay State’s political process that (theoretically) is supposed to put power in the hands of the people (even though it can be derailed at any point along the way)…
