SOUTHBOROUGH – Costco received another necessary approval as it works toward a new Southborough location.
On July 15, the Southborough Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) unanimously granted Costco relief from zoning ordinances relating to retaining walls and light fixtures. It’s a preliminary step; the applicant wanted the relief approved before seeking site plan approval, a process that will likely include more information, public feedback, and debate.
Costco hopes to open a location at 21 Coslin Drive, a 17.81-acre lot in Southborough with an adjoining 7.3-acre lot in Westborough. In October 2025, Southborough Town Meeting overwhelmingly (771-12) approved an amendment to the town’s zoning that allowed for Costco to be built on the site. Early proposals had Costco opening in summer 2027, and town officials hope the project acts “as a magnet for other businesses to co-locate with Costco.” “When the entire project is completed, a significant boost to the commercial tax base in Southborough is very likely,” the Select Board wrote.
