‘They deserve to be recognized’: Great turnout for free sundaes at Shrewsbury Senior Center

SHREWSBURY – Shrewsbury has thousands of senior citizens.

For a moment, it felt like all of them were gathered at the Shrewsbury Senior Center on Maple Avenue. On August 10, a line of hundreds led to Maria Smith, the designated “scooper” at the Friends of the Senior Center’s annual Ice Cream Social.

Once they reached the end of the line, seniors were treated to a sundae of their choice. All included: vanilla or chocolate ice cream, hot fudge and caramel, chocolate and rainbow sprinkles, Oreos and M&Ms, and, of course, whipped cream and a maraschino cherry.

Being the “head scooper” was no easy task for Smith, the president of the Friends of the Senior Center. Doling out gallons of ice cream to satisfy the line of hungry visitors was difficult, but Smith did it with a smile. All for the seniors…
