FEMA denies Governor Healey’s request for disaster declaration

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – We’re not seeing any snow at the moment but we are expecting snow at some point later on Tuesday, and while Massachusetts has been experiencing all kinds of different weather over the past year, FEMA has denied Governor Healey’s request for a major disaster declaration for Bristol, Hampden, and Worcester counties.

Governor Healey addresses public ahead of snowstorm

In December, Healey requested a Major Disaster Declaration from President Biden to support the ongoing recovery of communities here in Massachusetts, impacted by severe weather and flooding in September. FEMA decided that the damages caused by those storms were not beyond the capabilities of the state.

In a statement to 22News, a spokesperson for the governor’s office said, “Our administration is deeply disappointed that FEMA denied our request for a major disaster declaration for damage caused by extreme weather in September. We submitted a strong request based on the severe local impacts this storm had on our communities. We plan to appeal this decision and will do everything we can to continue our advocacy with our federal partners and support our communities.”
