Driver that hit bicyclist in Smithfield charged with DUI

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WPRI) — A bicyclist is in critical condition after he was struck by an alleged drunk driver Sunday night in Smithfield, according to police.

Officers were called to the scene on Pleasant View Avenue around 8:30 p.m.

The 65-year-old bicyclist was transported to the hospital with severe head injuries and lacerations.

Police say the driver, 38-year-old Lance Nicoletti of Smithfield, was taken into custody.

Nicoletti was arraigned Monday on charges of DUI liquor or drugs resulting in serious bodily injury and driving to endanger resulting in personal injury. He was ordered held without bail.

In court, it was revealed Nicoletti is a probation violator after receiving 30 years of probation back in 2014 for first-degree child molestation.
