Embrace Worcester Business group to advocate for local small businesses

WORCESTER — A group of local business owners, among them a former city councilor, are spearheading an initiative that aims to assist local businesses navigate the processes beyond the everyday workings of a business.

A mix that includes former City Councilor Tony J. Economou and Andrew Serrato Sr., the former longtime owner of Serrato Signs, the group calls itself Embrace Worcester Business.

Economou and Serrato said during an interview Monday that the grassroots organization looks to iron out the difficulties that businesses face not in workshops and offices but between business owners and local government.

Holding a “nonadversarial position” with regard to the city, Economou and Serrato echoed each other in saying that their group will aim to be a voice of guidance for local businesses and to champion a new path that changes processes that the city has in place.

“Our goal is not to be the person who carries the paperwork,” Economou said, “but to help the city change the way it does business and how it interacts with the businesses.
