With Doherty complete, city sets sights on new Burncoat High

WORCESTER — With students now roaming the gleaming hallways of the new Doherty Memorial High School, the school district sets its sights on the final and most challenging high school in need of remodeling: Burncoat.

After 13 previous attempts, Burncoat High was accepted into the Massachusetts School Building Authority’s eligibility period last December, which begins the process of developing a new school building. The eligibility period, which lasts until March 28, 2025, asks the district to form a school building committee, submit maintenance records and form enrollment projections, and the City Council needs to vote to provide initial funds for the project.

Worcester Deputy Superintendent Brian Allen said that the MSBA has a series of criteria it looks for when evaluating potential school replacement projects.

“The MSBA requires districts to identify the priorities that need to be addressed for the major renovation or replacement project through the Statement of Interest Process when submitting a school for consideration,” Allen said.
