2 New Bedford firefighters to be honored for saving disabled man

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — Firefighters across Massachusetts will be recognized on Monday for their acts of heroism and service.

Two New Bedford firefighters are among the 100 who will be honored at the 35th Annual Firefighter of the Year Award Ceremony at Mechanics Hall in Worcester.

Acting Lt. Brandon Medeiros and firefighter Steven Holzer are being hailed heroes after they saved a man with disabilities from a burning building last year .

The fire department said Medeiros and Holzer were among the first to respond to a house fire on Welcome Street last November. As flames and smoke shot out of the third story, they saw a man trying to escape from the rear stairwell.

Fire officials say the men immediately ran over and carried him to safety. Once he was in the hands of the paramedics, Medeiros and Holzer went back into the building to help extinguish the flames.
