Auditor says this new law takes effect tomorrow

BOSTON, Mass. (WWLP) – The State Auditor joined two advocacy groups, Act on Mass and Mass Fiscal Alliance, to call attention to an audit of the state legislature.

Act on Mass and Mass Fiscal are on opposite ends of the political spectrum but came together to call for their shared cause of immediate government transparency.

“It’s clear the legislative process is now broken. There is no one in house leadership in the legislature willing to stand up for the voters,” said Paul Craney, spokesperson of Mass Fiscal.

These groups, alongside the auditor, pointed to a section of the state constitution that explains that ballot laws take effect 30 days after the state election. Their offices interpret this to mean 30 days after November 5, which would have the law take effect on Thursday.

“Now, if history is any guide, we can expect legislative leaders to respond to this with further obfuscation and attempts to twist the words written in plain black in white in the state’s constitution,” said Scotia Hille, the Executive Director of Act On Mass.
