WORCESTER — A pedestrian was hit by a car while crossing North Lake Avenue near the entrance to UMass Memorial Medical Center Friday morning, according to police.
The female victim is being treated at the hospital; her condition was not immediately known, police said.
The woman was in the crosswalk, police said. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene.
The crash prompted the closing of North Lake Avenue for about an hour. The crash occurred about 7:15 a.m. near the rotary at the rear entrance of the hospital.
Pedestrian safety
Crashes involving pedestrians in recent years have prompted officials to declare a “ road safety and traffic violence crisis ” in the city.
In June, a 13-year-old girl, Gianna Rose Simoncini, was fatally struck by a motor vehicle while crossing Belmont Street (Route 9), on the south side of UMass Memorial Medical Center.
The City Council has backed a 25 mph speed limit for most streets in the city.
